Case Study: Lockjaw

My 19-year-old patient Bruno, pictured here on Screening Day, suffered for 3 years with a condition known as Ankylosis or Lockjaw where the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) of his jaw were literally locked shut. He survived by feeding himself through a tiny hole, where one of his teeth was conveniently missing. Bruno's jaws are free at last and it was quite a beautiful sight to see him smiling and eating a traditional African meal of yams and stewed beef and quite a beautiful sound to hear him speaking clearly.
