When in Rome...

I've really enjoyed getting to know the translators from Benin who volunteer in all departments aboard the Africa Mercy Ship. They are essential on the Wards in helping us communicate with our patients and I am amazed at their abilities to speak English, French, Fon and multiple tribal languages. Bridget, one of the translators who works in the Operating Room invited us to her birthday party. The evening began when we met our ride at the end of the dock. Dressed in our "Sunday best", 7 of us climbed into the back of a red pickup truck and hit the streets of Cotonou by night.

Nothing more fun than riding around in the back of a pickup truck

Bridget, the birthday girl, giving a birthday speech, thanking God for her 41 years of life and good health. (The average life expectancy in Benin is 50-55 years.) When it's your birthday in Benin, custom has it that you throw your own birthday party, cook a giant feast, invite your family and friends and give thanks.

Oh how I love to dance!
Getting our groove on to lively zouk music in Bridget's living room

Note the sleeping infant while Mom dances the night away!

Can't touch this!
Becky and Ginger learn the local moves.

Happy Birthday Bridget!
Thank you for sharing your special day with us in true Benin style!
